This is a celebration which largely originated in Mexico,^[1] where it is mostly observed, but also in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere.

Although associated with the Western Christian Allhallowtide observances of All Hallow’s Eve, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day,^[1] it has a much less solemn tone and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning.
